TRANSIT is making it clear what “new music”is:music of the 21st century. In addition to pieces from 2001-2004, the prog ramme includes mostly premieres commissioned by the festival itself. TRANSIT has become a nerve centre and forum for new music. Composers, performers, journalists, music students and listeners from all over Europe come to Leuven every year to take the pulse of the contemporary music scene.
The opening concert on Friday evening will give Flemish composers just starting their careers a chance to present themselves to this international forum.
On Saturday and Sunday there will be morning, afternoon and evening concerts,with time for conversation and debate in between, as well as introductions to acquaint the listener with the musical language of the composers. This language can show a refined handling of parameters,such as time, texture, timbre and dynamics but can include unusual playing techniques, multimedia, new instruments and technologies as well, resulting in a great variety in programming. TRANSIT is living proof that new music is more than abstract ideas and in fact is leading a very lively existence. The location of the STUK centre and the small scale of this mini-festival have certainly also contributed to its success.
TRANSIT Collectie is an initiative of MATRIX [New Music Centre], in cooperation with Festival 20/21 and the support of the city of Leuven.
